“In this poem, the road is a metaphor for life.”
A metaphor is something that isn’t literally true, but has a symbolic meaning. Many idioms are also metaphors, because they are verbal images that convey meaning instead of factual descriptions. For example, if someone says, “He is a ticking time-bomb,” that doesn’t mean he will actually explode, but it does mean he is bound to get angry or cause trouble soon.
「このポエムでは、道は人生のメタファーです」
メタファーとは文字通り事実ではないですが、シンボルとして意味があります。事実のままの説明ではなく言葉で表すイメージなので、イディオムにはメタファーが多いです。例えば、誰かが「彼はカチカチと音を立てる時限爆弾だ」と言った場合、彼が本当に文字通り爆発するわけではありませんが、もうすぐ絶対に怒ったりトラブル起こしたりするという意味です。
