“In spite of the bad weather, we had a good time.”

“In spite of” or “despite” are used to say that something didn’t have the effect you might expect. You might think our outing was not fun because the weather was so bad, but actually, we had a good time even though it rained!

The outcome doesn’t have to be positive: “In spite of studying all weekend, he still failed the test.”
