In Greek mythology, Achilles’ mother dipped him in a magic river to make him invincible. However, she held him by the heel, so the water did not touch his heel. He was a powerful warrior, but he died when a poison arrow hit him in the heel.
Now we use the phrase “Achilles’ heel” to mean the vulnerability of someone or something that is otherwise strong.
ギリシャ神話では、アキレウスの母が魔法の川に彼を浸し無敵にしました。しかし、彼女がかかとの部分を持っていた為、その部分は水に触れませんでした。アキレウスは強い戦士になりましたが、毒の矢で弱点のかかとを射られて死んでしまいました。
今では、強いものの弱みを「アキレウスのかかと」と呼びます。
