Picture of the Week: Mt. Everest

Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth, if you measure by height above sea level. Its peak is 8,848 meters above sea level. Many people attempt to climb it, but it is very dangerous. The first people to successfully climb Everest were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. A Japanese woman named Junko Tabei was the first woman to reach the top of the mountain.

エベレストは、海抜で測定すれば地球で一番高い山です。その頂点が海抜8848メートルです。登ってみる人は多いですが、危険な山です。最初に山頂まで登ったのがエドモンド・ヒラリーとテンジン・ノルゲイです。最初に山頂までたどり着いた女性は日本人の田部井淳子でした。
