“That theory doesn’t hold any water.” 「その説は矛盾している。」

“His alibi holds water.” 「彼のアリバイはありえる。」

“Does anyone have an explanation that holds any water?” 「少しでも納得のいく説明はないか?」

Imagine that an explanation or statement is a bucket. If there are holes in it, any water you put in the bucket will fall out right away. The holes are inconsistencies or things that don’t make sense. Something that doesn’t hold water can’t be true. If it holds water, it may be true.
