“Isn’t that his third beer tonight?”
“Yeah, he drinks like a fish. Maybe someone should run to the store for more beer.”
“Drink” can be used with any kind of drink—water, fruit juice, soda, etc. But if it’s not clear exactly what is being drunk, it often means alcohol. “Drink like a fish” is an idiom used to say someone drinks a lot of alcohol, because fish “drink” a lot of water (although it’s not exactly drinking).
「彼ったら今日3杯目のビールじゃない？」
「そう、彼はよく飲むよ。誰かもっとビール買いに行った方がいいんじゃない？」
Drink（飲む）は、どんな飲み物にでも使えます。水、ジュース、ソーダなど。でも何を飲んでいるのかはっきりしていない時は、大抵「アルコールを飲む」という意味になります。Drink like a fish（魚みたいに飲む）は、誰かが大酒飲みだと言うために使うイディオムです。なぜなら魚はたくさん水を「飲む」からです。（厳密に言うと「飲む」とはちょっと違いますが・・・）
