“It’s about five miles as the crow flies.” 「まっすぐ行けば５マイルくらいだ。」
移動しているとき、普段道路を行かなければなりません。何かへの距離が５マイルだとしても、道路がまっすぐそこに向かわない場合は５マイル以上の距離を走ることになってしまいます。道が曲がったり、ある道を通ってから別の道で別の方向に行く必要があったりします。カラスなら、まっすぐ跳べますので、「カラスが飛ぶように」という距離はまっすぐ行けばの距離です。
When traveling, we usually have to follow roads. If something is five miles away, we might have to cover more distance than five miles, because the roads don’t go straight there. The road might curve, or we have to go in one direction and then turn onto a different road going in another direction. A crow can fly in a straight line, so the distance “as the crow flies” is the actual distance in a straight line.
