“Did your mother say you could go out today? I thought you had a lot of homework.”
“Well, not in so many words, but she implied it!”
When we talk about what someone said, we often rephrase it using different words. We especially like to shorten things so we don’t have to repeat something long. But changing it can also change the meaning. When we admit that the person didn’t say exactly what we reported, we say that they didn’t say it “in so many words”.
「母さんは今日出かけていいと言った？宿題がたくさんあるんじゃないのか？」
「まあ、はっきりそうとは言ってないけど、そう思わせるようなことを言った！」
誰かが言ったことについて話すとき、違う言葉を使って内容を伝えることがよくあります。特に長い会話を全部言わないで済むように省略する事が多いです。でも言葉を変えることで意味が変わってしまうことがあります。正確に言った通りの言葉ではなかったことを認めて、「そのままの言葉ではなかった in so many words」と言います。
